Biodiversity Refuges
To ensure the conservation of biodiversity within Dilmah Tea Gardens, Dilmah Conservation launched a series of biodiversity assessments in collaboration with the Department of Zoology, University of Colombo and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Sri Lanka Country Office. The assessments aimed to identify the species residing within the tea estates as well as habitats which have special conservation value.
A program for enhancing watershed management towards biodiversity conservation within Hunuwela and Rilhena estates, which were discovered to contain significant biological diversity, were established following the assessments. In addition, DC is undertaking community education programs focused on safe guarding the environment, as well as various species and habitat management, and soil and water conservation activities.
