Kindness

Kindness is at the heart of everything we do at Dilmah.

Dilmah was formed with a heart of Kindness, a foundation of Quality and Integrity and framed in ethical Purpose. In acknowledging the enduring connection that every business has with people and nature, and the irrevocable obligation of every person or institution to work towards addressing inequality, climate and other threats, our Founder Merrill J. Fernando advocated a philosophy of kindness that has greater resonance today than when it was first conceived, 75 years ago.

A minimum 15% of our pretax profits is used to help people in need, and an additional amount for the environment – ecosystem conservation, restoration and climate action. In the financial year 2024/5 MJF Foundation programmes were funded by a contribution of nearly LKR 2 billion, with Dilmah Conservation utilising an additional amount from Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company for its environmental initiatives.

Dilmah Foundation

Empowering Lives

The beneficiaries of the Merrill J. Fernando (MJF) Charitable Foundation are less fortunate people who are the most important stakeholders in the success of each project. Restoration of their dignity is therefore a key component of every MJF Foundation project. The five areas of focus for the MJF Foundation are:

  • Children with disability: focus on ability through education, creativity & therapy
  • Education: formal, life skills & vocational training for less fortunate youth
  • Tea and cinnamon communities: nutrition & welfare of plantation communities
  • Empowerment: sustainable entrepreneurship for dignity & impact
  • Healthcare: strengthening capacity in emergency care & managing severe illness
