Gratian Fernando

Scout Master & Culinary Instructor at MJF Centre, Moratuwa

I train children and youth with learning disabilities and developmental delays in basic cookery, management skills, leadership and personality development that will enable them to eventually integrate into society as productive individuals

For the last 9 years, I have been playing the role of a multifaceted teacher, providing my services for children, youth, men and women from different walks of life with different values, upbringings, experiences, and beliefs. But at MJF Centre, Moratuwa, we put all of our differences aside and use our strengths & resources to further ourselves together. There really is nothing we can’t do if we unite as one. I thank our Founder - Merrill J. Fernando for setting a great example of building a successful business with a purpose. It’s a true privilege to work in this Centre and create a positive impact on people who live with limited life choices.

In 2011, I joined the MJF Centre in Moratuwa as a Culinary Instructor. A few years later I realised that I could give something more to its people by sharing my experiences and knowledge as a Scoutmaster. This is how the MJF Scouts Programme started in Moratuwa. The Scouting Movement at MJF Centre, Moratuwa

truly shows the spirit of brotherhood and the potential of humanity. The boys here work together in inclusive teams attending to their respective duties while assisting their fellow team members who need that extra support. I train children and youth with learning disabilities and developmental delays in basic cookery, management skills, leadership and personality development that will enable them to eventually integrate into society as productive individuals. Learning simple tasks such as making a cup of tea, installing the tent, buying groceries and setting up the table can give them the essential tools and skills to be independent, confident & resilient in society. As the Assistant District Commissioner of Sri Lanka Scouts Association, I also get the opportunity to involve MJF Scouts in regional camps and give them the chance to explore places, encounter challenges, and experience the thrill of adventure with other scouts.
