Primary Class Teacher, The MJF Rainbow Centre - Moratuwa

The MJF Centre gave me the courage to stand strong from a life that was slowly falling apart. I respect its Founder Merrill. J Fernando for being a silent guardian and a ray of hope for hundreds of people like me who had to go through a tumultuous life at a very young age. I got married at 17, was disowned by my own blood, had 3 kids and endured a terrible divorce that left me on the streets with
two sons and a daughter with Cerebral Palsy. There were moments along the way I thought about quitting, but I’m glad I didn’t.

Today, I work with children of intellectual disabilities at the Rainbow Centre, nurturing their skills while fostering curiosity and a love for learning in them. Watching them grow inspires confidence in their parents and it is both an emotional and endearing feeling that every mother with a child with a disability can relate to. I feel happy when I can bring a smile to their faces with little things like celebrating their achievements and milestones together
